Blogging is a great tool for learning. If you as a teacher often let your students bring home a book from the class library, you can use blogging so they will get the most from the borrowed book. Since you ask your students to do a guided book report on those books that they bring home to make sure that they will read them why not let them do it in a blog? As long as you are connected to the web, you can easily comment on their work anywhere without carrying their homework journal around. Aside from that it will be easier for you to track who bring home what book and the list of books that they haven't read yet.
Since children learn to write by writing, you can also use blogs for journal entries if you have more than one computer in your classroom, so a group can be writing in their journal while the other groups are otherwise engaged. Students will find it easier to edit their posts and you can easily read and give suggestions how they can improve their writing.
Since blogs not only let you control the content but also allows you to add relevant, pictures, videos and music or audio, blogging is also good for discussion of a topic. For example if your class are studying Holidays Around the World, you can present different holidays around the globe on December by posting them in your blog to which the whole class is subscribed of course. You will have guide questions in your post that will guide what they will write in their posts. Blogs allow all your students to participate that is otherwise not possible during live class discussion because of time constraints. Aside from that there are those students who are not so comfortable to share in front of their classmates because they are afraid to make mistakes, since a blog let them easily rewrite what is in their thoughts you might get a better contribution from them.
The best feature of blogs designed for classroom use or for student is that they offered administrative function to the teacher so you as the teacher can control what is posted thus your students will not be able to post anything foolish that they may regret later.
